The DCAU Weekly Review – The New Batman Adventures

 The New Batman Adventures

Episode 11

The Ultimate Thrill

Another new villain, Roxy Rocket.  She’s a thrill junky who robs for the excitement of it.  A former stunt girl who was eventually fired for doing stunts too dangerous.  She’s now addicted to Batman and keeps committing crimes to lure him in.  Batman’s solution is to give her the thrill of a lifetime.  It pushes the boundaries of children’s programing beyond anything that anyone would think was allowed.  Batman’s climactic battle with her is truly a double entendre.  How that got by censors is baffling.

The Penguin appears in this episode as a club owner.  This isn’t first appearance but it’s worth mentioning he’s no longer a featured villain anymore.  He serves as a point man for other villains.  They fence their loot through him which is apparently a harder crime for Batman to bust.  Or perhaps Batman allows it because it’s a central hub for him to capture the bigger villains.

Ultimately he serves a far more intimidating side villain than main villain.  While Penguin never gets his own episode in TNBA, his recurring role is truly an improvement from any of his BtAS appearances.  He’s a better villain, more enjoyable.  The show not only improved his look, they improved his character without actually changing the character.
