Season 1

Episode 16 Shuttlepod One

Malcolm Reed and Commander Tucker end up stranded in a shuttle pod together.   Reed is annoying, Tucker is practical.  The odd couple in outer space.  It’s very slightly similar to the Star Trek original series episode The Galileo Seven but different characters and a larger special effect budget change a lot of the drama.  Ultimately The Galileo Seven is a far superior episode but when you have Spock and Bones working off one another, it’s destined to be gold. Tucker and Reynolds aren’t bad characters, just not as iconic.

Season 1

Episode 15 Shadows of P’Jem

The Andorians destroy the spy station the Vulcans had setup at their monastery.  The Vulcans blame Archer for it but they cannot punish Archer for it so they try to have T’Pol removed from the ship.

Antics ensue that allow T’Pol to save the right Vulcan and keep her position on Enterprise.  We also get to see some Andorians again.  The show was always a little more exciting when Andorians appeared.

Season 1

Episode 14 Sleeping Dogs

The Enterprise comes across a Klingon ship in some trouble.  They decide to help them.  The Klingon’s act like jerks about it.  It’s fun to see Klingons on Star Trek.  The episode does the job.  It’s not bad, it’s not great.  It’s hard coming up with 26 episodes for a TV show in one year.

Season 1

Episode 13

Such a beautiful episode.  It has so much heart to it.  The Enterprise comes across a species of aliens called the Valakian, who do not have warp technology but have entered deep into space, in hopes of finding aliens that do.  They are in search of a cure for a virus that’s killing their people.  Their entire species faces extinction in a few generations.

Enterprise offers to help, while researching the disease Doctor Phlox learns of another species, the Menk that lives in unison with the Valakian.  The Menk are seen as lower life forms by the Valakian.  Phlox hypothesis is the Valakian are dying by natural order and the Menk are destined to become the dominate species on the planet.

Archer wants to cure the Valakian but Phlox convinces him it’s not their right to play God.  Phlox reveals he discovered a cure for the virus but says it’s not appropriate to give it to them because of the technological limitations.  Archer ultimately decides to give the Valakian medicine to alleviate the symptoms for a period of time and give them more time to discover a cure for themselves if possible but he doesn’t give them the cure.

It’s truly a wonderful examination on where to draw the line on help and overreach.  Saving the Valakian would condemn the Menk to a low class position and perhaps in several generations grow into a planet full of war and conflict.  Allowing the Valakian to die may allow the Menk to evolve but there is no guaranteed they would progress as the dominant species.  Ultimately it’s not Enterprise or Earth’s place to make those decisions.  The natural evolution of a species and planet has to unfold on its own.  A poignant message mankind needs to adopt should we ever travel outside our solar system.

Season 1

Episode 12 Silent Enemy

This episode has some nice action  as the Enterprise encounters some hostile aliens.  They get into a bit too much trouble and Archer considers abandoning the mission to have the ship return to Earth for repairs and some R&R.  As the Aliens keep attacking them Archer is convinced by Commander Tucker and Malcolm Reed to allow them to begin work on installing phase cannons.  Archer agrees.  When the aliens attack again, Enterprise uses the new weapons on the aliens, win the battle.  Archer decides they don’t need to return to Earth.  The mission continues.

This would have worked as a defacto series finale because many first season TV shows tend to be canceled after episode 12 or 13.  Thankfully the show did well enough that it was allowed to close out the season.
