Season 2

Episode 51 Bounty

Captain Archer is now wanted by the Klingons and bounty hunters are after him.  Archer gets tricked and captured by a Tellarite and turned over to the Klingons.  The Klingons shortchange the Tellarite so the dude lets Enterprise know where Archer is so he can be freed.  This adds some nice layering to Klingons being enemies but the later season payoff was a bit weak.

Season 2

Episode 49 Regeneration

Bring on The Borg!!! It doesn’t really fit with the continuity of Star Trek but has some great action and shows Archer’s resolve as a military tactician.  Flying around in space with phasers and torpedoes without using them aggressively on occasion limits the action.  But a full on assault while trying to stop one of Star Trek’s most interesting bad guys was a breath of fresh air for the struggling show.

The Borg appearance ties in with the film Star Trek: First Contact and the time travel aspect helps alleviate some of the Star Trek story inconsistencies that may have been created.

The episode was seen as a gimmick to pull in fans who wandered away from the series.  It is a shame because it was a great episode in it of itself. Also, season two was proving to be far superior to season one.  But the show was struggling to find its footing with audiences and The Borg episode was their attempt to recapture the die-hard fans.

Season 2

Episode 48 Cogenitor

This would have worked if it was a Star Trek: Voyager episode or Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode.  It’s just hard to believe Commander Tucker could be this naïve about alien interactions this late into season two.

Enterprise befriends the alien race Vissians.  Archer becomes buddy buddy with their leader while Tucker becomes obsessed with this person called a Cogenitor who helps the aliens procreate.  The aliens treat cogenitors as pets but Tucker is convinced they should have the same rights as the rest of the Vissans.  Ultimately he tries to change the complete culture of an alien species, it doesn’t go over well for anyone, the cogenitor kills herself.  Tucker gets ripped a new one by Archer for his error and pissing off an entire alien species.

Looking at it from an outside perspective the Vissans culture is total messed up and the cogenitors are sex slaves.  Yes, they are needed to increase the population but they are treated as sub-par.  When in fact they are the most important part of their species survival.  It would have been nice to see Star Trek follow-up with this species generations later and see how Trip’s influence caused a revolt and saved these people.

Archer’s attitude ultimately was the right approach.  It’s not their place to get involved with other people’s cultures.  They’re just there to make friends.  Sometimes that means not judging things that is very easy to make a judgment on.  Those issues could theoretically work themselves out over the natural course of time.

Season 2

Episode 47 The Breach

This episode isn’t terrible, it looks at physician ethics and the accountability of genocide.  Dr Phlox meets a sick alien called the Hudak.  Phlox is a Denobulan and his people killed a bunch of Hudak and it’s caused a lot of bad blood.  So the Hudak wants nothing to do with Phlox.  The dude would rather die then get treated by a Denobulan.  Eventually they learn to work through their prejudices and make a better more peaceful universe.
