Episode 29 Minefield
Back-to-back great episodes were rare with Enterprise but the follow-up to Carbon Creek was Minefield and it was brilliant. It’s Earth’s first clash with Romulans, and in an effort to be consistent with Star Trek lore, we never see them. In the Star Trek original series episode Balance of Terror, Spock establishes during the Earth-Romulan War the two species never saw one another. That remains true during their clashes through the Enterprise series. The tension with Archer and trying to save Malcolm made for interesting character development. Any episode that focused on filling the historical gaps between Star Trek: the Original Series and Star Trek: Enterprise were some of the best. It took ingenuity to take a few lines of exposition from the 60s TV show and develop entire episodes around them. Enterprise would have shined more brightly if they had tried to incorporate more gap filler episodes like Minefield.
